Chinese, American Students Survey the Petrified Forest of Lesvos


The renowned Petrified Forest on Lesvos has become the focus of attention of major universities around the world.
Groups of Geoscience students are visiting the Greek island to study the ancient forest which was formed from the fossilized remains of plants over millions of years.
In 2014, it was put on UNESCO’s world heritage list of cultural and natural landmarks.
The latest visitors were two groups of students from the Universities of Beijing and New York.
They held field outdoor exercises in the protected area of the Petrified Forest and the Geopark of Lesvos.
Professor Nikos Zouros, director of the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest, was responsible for the educational visit.
The students also visited the Nisiopi Marine Park and the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest.
