The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) wants to start the process of accession to the European Union, but Greece objects because of the ongoing name dispute.
FYROM’s Foreign Minister Nikola DimitrovĀ told Reuters on Wednesday, that Greece disagrees with the name FYROM, the provisional name international organizations use for the Balkan country.
Athens rejects the name Macedonia because it implies territorial claim over Greece’s northerly region of Macedonia, and has vetoed FYROM’s attempts to join both NATO and the EU.
According to Greek officials, Athens could discuss a compound name such as “Upper Macedonia” or “New Macedonia”.
Dimitrov told Reuters that his country has made the reforms required and accession talks can start now, and the two neighbors can discuss the name issue parallel to the accession talks.
The two sides will meet again later this month at the UN General Assembly in New York.
