Railways in Greece Immobilized After Rail Workers' 24-hour Strike

Greek railway workers started a 24-hour strike and stopped the movement of all trains. They are protesting against the privatisation of the railway operator.
The trade unions insist on terminating the transfer of the Greek railway company “Trainose” to the Italian state operator, which was approved by both the Greek government and the European Commission.
The railway workers’ strike is the first of many against the transfer of Trainose, which according to official data is in debt for over 20 million euros.
More strikes by other Greek transportation unions have been called this week, including one by workers in Athens’ blue buses.
A 24-hour strike against a government mobilization scheme for its employees by the Athens city rail workers for Wednesday, was called off after assurances given by officials.
