Baby Whale Rescued in Crete, Returns to High Seas

A 5-metre-long baby whale spotted by a citizen early Friday morning on Karavovrysi beach, Phaestos, Crete, was rescued by the local coastguard.
The small mammal, which was injured in its tail and its side, had lost its way and ended up on the Cretan beach, but before anyone could look after it, it started wondering around the shallow waters.
After hours of trying to locate the injured baby whale, members of the local coastguard along with volunteers managed to rescue it and eventually steer it back to high waters.
The incident caused local and national sensation and highlighted the environmental sensitivities of the people of Crete displayed a few years ago, when in a similar incident they had located and rescued a baby alligator.
