Blow to Greek Start-Ups as Government Mulls Restrictions on Pioneering Taxi Services

The Greek government is proposing a new legislative initiative that would impose restrictions on taxi services, and endanger successful startup companies in the sector.
Critics say, that in effect, the government is giving in to the powerful taxi drivers lobby which has campaigned for regulating the sector and imposing bureaucratic barriers to companies such as Uber and Beat; formally Taxi Beat, which has become very popular in recent years.
The bill would require all companies offering taxi services to have a state license and to do business only with licensed taxis. This would effectively bar the services of companies like Uber, which work with nonprofessional drivers using private vehicles.
It also restricts the operation of a Beat, a Greek startup, which through an application the customer can order a taxi 24 hours a day, and can assess and evaluate the services offered.
Creator of Beat, Nicos Drandakis, has started a social media campaign to cancel the government’s plans.
Thousands of Greeks have signed a petition against the bill claiming that Beat, and other on line taxi platforms, give them flexibility and the opportunity to choose the taxi and its driver.
