Zoe Konstantopoulou; the fiery former president of the Greek parliament, has refused to pay at a highway toll in solidarity to an activist who was jailed for the same reason.
Konstantopoulou; president of the parliament during the first ‘revolutionary’ six months of SYRIZA’s government, recorded the incident and uploaded it to social media.
She wrote: “On the way to Kalamata. I do not pay the tolls, supporting the act of disobedience of Stratos Daskarolis; our fellow citizen who went into prison because he did not pay tolls.”
Konstantopoulou who has become a fierce critic of former comrade Alexis Tsipras, remains faithful to the “I Won’t Pay” movement (Den Plirono) that gained prominence in the years 2011-2015.
During that period: activists; encouraged by the then opposition SYRIZA, blockaded highway toll booths to give drivers free passage, and covered subway ticket machines with plastic bags so commuters can’t pay. Even doctors were joining in, preventing patients from paying fees at state hospitals.
The “I Won’t Pay” movement has sparked heated debate in Greece with some calling it civil disobedience, others a freeloading spirit.
