‘Lord of the Rings’ Lefteris Petrounias Wins Gold at World Championship (video)

Lefteris Petrounias won gold at the World Gymnastics Championships in Montreal on Saturday to become only the ninth gymnast to win back-to-back Worlds golds in the rings.
The 27-year-old scored 15.433 points after an excellent performance of his routine, with his closest rival Russia’s Denis Abliazin coming second with 15.333 points.
Reuters reports that the Greek’s mastery of his event, which saw him hailed as the new ‘Lord of the Rings’ after victory at the Olympic Games, was in evidence again.
Petrounias proved a crowd-pleaser by spreading his fingers while holding a horizontal pose rather than gripping with his fists.
This was Petrounias’s seventh consecutive victory, matching the feat of fellow Greek Vlassis Maras who had also won two straight golds in the rings in 2001 and 2002.
