Lagarde and Tsakalotos Agree on Timely Completion of Greek Third Review

Christine Lagarde and Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos agreed that a timely completion of the third review of the Greek bailout is essential for discussions on debt restructuring to gather pace.
The Managing Director met Tsakalotos at the IMF headquarters in Washington on Saturday, two days before her meeting with Greek premier Alexis Tsipras.
According to reports, Lagarde and Tsakalotos agreed that the third review should be completed by the end of the year.
Tsakalotos also sought to get clarification from Lagarde on whether the Fund will stay in Greece’s program. There is no word on whether the IMF chief provided a definite answer.
A source, close to Tskalotos, said that Greece is looking forward to a debt deal by next February, as opposed to the European creditors who see next June as the most likely timeframe for a completion of an agreement on Greek debt.
The same source, speculating about a possible withdrawal of the IMF from the Greek program and the impact such a move would have on Greece’s efforts to return to the markets, was reassuring.
“Greece will return to the markets with or without the International Monetary Fund”, he said.
