The Australian Embassy in Greece has teamed up with the Panathinaikos Rugby Club to present a Women’s Rugby Clinic for students at Campion School in Athens.
Approximately 30 students participated in the one hour skills session run by the Panathinaikos Women’s Team on 17 October, who also shared with the students their experience and joy of playing rugby.
“Gender equality and women’s empowerment are central themes of Australia’s foreign policy” said Australia’s Acting Ambassador Sophia McIntyre.
“By encouraging women and girls to get out and have a go, whether it be on the rugby field or in the boardroom, we want young women to see that opportunities are open to them.”

Panathinaikos women’s rugby Head Coach and player, Lina Norman, said the workshop was a great opportunity to showcase rugby and the benefits of sport to a new audience.
“I just love the spirit of rugby. It is a game for all shapes and personalities. Everyone is welcome.”
“I find that girls who come along to training and try the game generally love it. We make sure it is fun,” Norman said.

Campion School Head Rugby Coach, George Psaromatis, said the initiative was an excellent way to launch the school rugby season.
“This is the first time Campion School has offered rugby to girls and the interest shown has been very encouraging. There is a lot of potential and we hope this is just the start of girls participation in rugby at the school.” Psaromatis said.
