Eleven-year-old Afghan Boy to Carry Greek Flag in "OXI Day" Parade

Amir; an 11-year-old refugee boy from Afghanistan, will carry the Greek flag during the annual school parade to commemorate the October 28, 1940 anniversary of Greeceā€™s refusal to ally with the Italian Axis powers in World War II, known as “OXI Day.”
Amir; a fifth-year primary school pupil, lives with his family in Athens. They arrived along with many refugees on the island of Lesvos a year and a half ago.
He was picked by lot; under new rules introduced by the Syriza-led government earlier this year, that scrapped flag-bearing selection on the basis of academic performance.
The new parade flag-bearing rules caused a political uproar when announce by the government, with opposition parties accusing Syriza of ideological aversion towards academic excellence.
