Greek Metropolitan to Stand Trial for Inciting Hate Against Gays

Metropolitan of Kalavryta Amvrosios is to stand trial next year following comments against the gay community.
In December 2015, when the Greek parliament was debating the law about allowing cohabitation agreements between homosexual couples, Amvrosios launched a tirade against homosexuals on the internet.
“Spit on them! Deprecate them! Vote against them!” said Amvrosios.
The metropolitan, renowned for his controversial views, continued: “They are not human! They are freaks of nature! Mentally and spiritually sick! They are mentally insane!”
A few days later, on January 16, 2016, nine citizens filed a lawsuit against him for inciting violence.
The lawsuit was upheld by the prosecutor who referred Amvrosios to trial, to be held on 15 March 2018 in the town of Aigio in Peloponnese.
