New Center-Left Coalition Party Elects PASOK Leader Fofi Gennimata

The new Greek center-left party elected politician Fofi Gennimata on Sunday to lead a new alliance, hoping to win back voters disillusioned after seven years of crisis and boost their popularity as the country appears more polarized than ever.
The not yet named party carries the ambition of breaking the polarized political landscape where center-right New Democracy and left-wing Syriza are fighting in the polls.
Around 165,000 citizens voted in this second round of the leadership election, slightly down from a little over 200,000 who voted for the first round last Sunday. Gennimata was facing fellow PASOK member and MEP, Nikos Androulakis, who secured over 43% of the vote.
Gennimata won about 56% of the vote. The new alliance includes Greece‘s once-powerful Socialist PASOK party, which Gennimata already leads, the Democratic Socialist Movement, the Democratic Left and the Potami (River) party.
The two main parties of the new coalition have agreed to cooperate, but hold on to their respective independence in the current parliament until the next election. PASOK carries has 19 seats, while Potami carries another 6 in the 300-member House.
