AEK Fights Back to Earn a Point Against Rijeka in Europa League

After a disastrous first half, AEK managed to get a point (2-2) in a dramatic tie against Rijeka of Croatia at the Olympic Stadium of Athens on Thursday.
AEK needs at least a draw in its last game of the group stage against Austria in Vienna to progress to the last 32 of the Europa League.
The Athens club could have secured progress into the next round from last night, but its abysmal performance in the first half hour of the game made the task extremely difficult.
Rijeka surprised AEK with its brilliant counter-attack play and secured a two goal lead by the 30’ minute. Both goals were scored by Alexander Gorgon.
It could have been much worse for the Greeks, as at that period the Croats hit the woodwork twice.
The Athens club cut the deficit in the first half’s time added-on with Sergio Araujo and equalized on the 55’ with a Lazaros Christodoulopoulos header.
AEK kept up the pressure on the Croat champion in search for the winning goal, and got mighty close one minute from time when Araujo hit the crossbar.
