The possibility that the eight Turkish soldiers who sought asylum in Greece would be tried in Greece was brought up on Thursday by Justice Minister Stavros Kontonis.
Kontonis spoke at a press conference and responding to a reporter’s question he said that the Turkish military officers who sought asylum after the failed coup attempt in Turkey in July 2016, might go to trial in a Greek court for the crimes they allegedly committed.
“The prime minister has said that they must have a fair trial. The possibility of them being tried in Greece for offenses committed abroad, in accordance with Article 8 of the Penal Code, is contemplated.
The issue of extradition is definitively closed. The decision of the Supreme Court is absolutely respected by all of us. I can not understand why some legal circles are bringing the issue back. The case is in the hands of justice,” Kontonis said.
According to Article of Greece’s Penal Code, “Crimes committed abroad can be punished under Greek law.”
