An incredible, eerie cloud formation looming over Crete this week had local people imagining aliens had arrived.
Photographer Yiannis Gkikas captured the rare sight on Thursday with his camera over Rethymno; his striking pictures were posted on the Meteokrites Weather website by Eirini Kalatzaki.
This special cloud shape is formed at a high altitude, perpendicular to the wind direction and, as Kalaitzaki says, in Rethymno such clouds have been formed in the past due to the southern winds.
