Legal Costs Raised for Defense of Greek Woman Jailed in Hong Kong

Family, friends and anonymous donors have raised the equivalent of more than 10,000 US dollars for the legal defense of a 19-year-old Greek woman who is in custody in Hong Kong on drug trafficking charges.
According to the lawyer representing the family of Eirini Melissaropoulou the amount was delivered to her legal counsel in Hong Kong.
Earlier, press reports in Greece had suggested that due to capital controls, that are still in place in the country, the money needed could not be transferred.
Capital controls have been imposed in Greece since June 2015 and prevent large amounts of money to be transferred abroad.
The parents have sent a petition to the Greek Ministry of Finance asking to lift the capital limitations for their case.
Melissaropoulou was arrested on November 22, 2017 at the Hong Kong airport carrying in her backpack 2.6 kilograms of cocaine, valued at 300,000 euros.
Drug trafficking in Hong Kong is a grave crime, punishable with life in prison and a fine of 640,000 U.S. dollars
