Crete: "Star Destination" for Austrian Tourists

The island of Crete is being called a “star destination” for Austrian tourists by the country’s tour operators, based on data showing that Crete was among Austrians‘ top tourist destination, in 2017.
According to data from TUI Group, a multinational travel and tourism company headquartered in Hannover, Germany, Crete has seen a 45% rise in its bookings from Austria, based on a smart tourist campaign.
Tourist executive of the Heraklion prefecture, Helena Vougioukalaki, responsible for Crete’s promotion campaign in Vienna, says that 2018 is expected to be an even more successful season for the island’s tourism.
Given the excellent state of the country’s economy, an estimated 88% of Austrians plan on making at least one holiday trip abroad this year.
Greece is by far the most popular destination for Austrians, with a 32.2% rise in bookings, according to the local Ruefa Reisekompass 2018 annual poll.
Austrians are considered among the highest spending tourists in Greece.
Their apparent love for Crete reflects in that many have already booked their winter holidays on the island, for the month of February 2018.
In Austria’s biggest tourist exhibition, FerienMesse, with over 150,000 visitors, the Cretan kiosk is the most popular, with hundreds of Austrians stopping by to book their holidays to the island and taste traditional Cretan products offered by the prefecture’s representatives.
