Banner reading ‘Macedonia is Greek’ is carried by Orthodox priests in Aigio

Church bells rang out on Wednesday as dozens of Greek Orthodox priests protested in the town of Aigio, demanding the term ‘Macedonia’ be excluded from any new name for FYROM.
The priests, bearing a banner proclaiming ‘Macedonia is Greek’, marched in the center of the town.
Wednesday’s demonstration was organized by the nationalist bishop of the town Amvrosios who led the march.
According to a report by local site Filodimos.gr, during the priests’ march the bells of all churches in the town were sounded.
As negotiations between Greece and FYROM on the name of the former Yugoslav republic began in New York on Wednesday, Greek opponents of a compromise deal are intensifying their campaign.
A rally is to be held in Thessaloniki on Sunday with the participation of church leaders and politicians.
People from as far away as Crete are planning to join the demonstration.
