Greek Opposition Head Raises FYROM with US Ambassador

Greece’s main opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis (R) with US ambassador Geoffrey R. Pyatt.

Greece’s main opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis met US ambassador Geoffrey R. Pyatt early Friday afternoon ahead of Saturday’s briefing on the FYROM talks with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
Sources said all issues concerning Greece-U.S. relations were discussed in the meeting, with the conservative leader relaying his New Democracy party’s public position on the ongoing FYROM name negotiations
Yesterday, it was reported that a split had emerged between Greek conservatives and their European partners over the name dispute.
In comments reported by the EurActiv news site, center-right European People’s Party (EPP) chief Joseph Daul hailed the “window of opportunity” available to resolve the long-running dispute, saying he hoped for concrete results.
However, Mitsotakis has expressed his view that a solution to the name issue should be postponed.
Briefing
Mitsotakis will also be the first Greek opposition leader to meet Tsipras on Saturday, where he will receive updates on the FYROM name negotiations.
However, the New Democracy leader has criticized the prime minister for what he called the delay in briefing Greece’s opposition.
There are scheduled meetings in Maximos Mansion between Tsipras and all opposition leaders through Saturday morning.
After Mitsotakis, Tsipras will be updating PASOK leader Fofi Gennimata, Communist Party Secretary General Dimitris Koutsoumbas, The River president Stavros Theodorakis and Centrists’ Union leader Vasilis Leventis.
