Tsipras 'Playing Poker' on 'Macedonia': FT

The “diplomatic rewards are tempting” for Greek premier Alexis Tsipras to broker a deal on the ‘Macedonia‘ name dispute, but he risks pushing an exhausted Greek public too far.
This was the view of influential U.K. newspaper the Financial Times on Thursday which wrote that the Greek leader was “under pressure” from the U.S. to unblock Skopje’s path to NATO membership.
It also described the issues as a “high-risk” strategy for the Greek leader, “in a year where he should be celebrating Greece’s exit from eight years of financial bailouts“.
The FT also pointed to a turbulent mix of austerity-weary Greek voters and some “ultra-nationalists” in his own government which could make any Tsipras-endorsed deal come at too high a price for the SYRIZA leader.
With just days to go before a major rally planned for Athens, and international diplomacy speeding up, for “the aggrieved Greeks, who have been under the tutelage of outside creditors for nearly a decade, it may prove to be one indignity too many,” the FT added.
