It is official that the largest political party in Cyprus is an amazing new entity that grew from people’s rebellion as a peaceful protest against a petty Kommatokratia (politicocracy ) that ruined the island.
It’s called: abstension and blank voting. It has over 130,000 members (30 percent) and this will grow much bigger after Sunday’s run-off vote for a new president.
After watching this week’s television debate I despair to say there is no hope for a change. Last night, left-wing challenger Stavros Malas was not so convincing as an “independent” but as a candidate for the resurgence of the AKEL party to come to power through the back door.
God save this place with such brains; political brains and parties that refuse to accept their mistakes but blame others for their incompetence while pretending to claim they are whiter than white.
In fact, the Kommatokratia has lost the trust of the people, and citizens have shown that they are sick with their political behavior.
If a spontaneous blank/white vote was recognized (an official people’s veto on bad government and bad politics) all our petty politicians and their parties would start to behave in the interest of the nation and not for their own political party agenda.
I will certainly cast a blank vote as my humble protest against a system that refuses to admit their failure for what we have done to this beautiful island.
After listening to the debate last night it would not surprise me if over 200,000 people abstain from voting in Sunday’s elections – and for good reason.
