Football Fans Fight in Downtown Athens

Police have made arrests after clashes broke out in central Athens on Thursday ahead of a UEFA Europa League match between Dynamo Kiev and AEK Athens.

The Ukrainian fans are being blamed for broken windows and other damage caused to a number of premises in the city’s Kolonaki area.

Although some reports claim the fighting took place between Ukrainian fans and Russians, the Dynamo Kiev fans had already been threatened by far-left groups in Athens ahead of their arrival.

The so-called Rubicon anarchist group accused Dynamo Kiev supporters of being connected to the far right.
