European Commissioner Avramopoulos Files Suit against 2 Novartis Witnesses

European Commissioner for Migration and Home Affairs Dimitris Avramopoulos on Friday filed a suit against two of the three protected witnesses in the Novartis case.
Avramopoulos, a former health minister, is suing the witnesses for perjury, slander and defamation as they have testified he was taking huge bribes from the Swiss pharmaceuticals giant.
The Commissioner served in Greece’s health ministry from 2006 until the 2009 elections.
In his written statement, Avramopoulos speaks of false witnesses, stressing that  “there is not one word in the testimonies that is not false, something that is self-evident and obvious”.
Avramopoulos asks the Deputy Prosecutor of the Supreme Court to review the protection regime enjoyed by the witnesses, so that the two are “brought to justice”.
The Commissioner further calls for a full investigation and prosecution of other persons, moral offenders, accomplices and participants who committed criminal offenses. The former minister also stressed that “he has absolute confidence in Greek justice and believes that the plot will soon be revealed and the truth will shine.”
At the same time, in a letter to House Speaker Nikos Voutsis, Avramopoulos informs that he will file a memorandum, as on Wednesday, February 21, when the debate will be held in Parliament, he will be in the United States for a scheduled meeting with the UN General Secretary.
