Erdogan: We Arm Ourselves Because We Have Bad Neighbors

“We developed a big armament industry because we have bad neighbors,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said this week, in a thinly veiled reference to Greece and Cyprus.
According to Cyprus News Agency (CNA), Erdogan spoke at the Presidential Palace in Ankara on Wednesday, arguing that Turkey is massively producing weapons.
Erdogan referred to the invasion to Cyprus in 1974, describing it as a “peacekeeping operation”.
“In 1974, during the peacekeeping operation of Cyprus, they destroyed our entire communication system with a silencing operation. The head of that operation were our supposed allies. They destroyed it. What happened then? We established ASELSAN,” Erdogan said, referring to the Turkish defense manufacturer.
“ASELSAN has now become a company that participates in international competitions. These bad neighbors made us acquire weapons, they made us gain knowledge to be able to manufacture weapons,” the Turkish president said, according to CNA.
