Video footage showing two Greek soldiers tormenting a dog before throwing it off a cliff has shocked the public and to the culprits being arrested.
The incident occurred a few months ago at a military unit in Epirus, north-western Greece.
The two soldiers, who have since completed their military service, have been identified by the army. Police are preparing to charge them with animal cruelty.
According to reports, the dog miraculously survived the ordeal. A pensioner in a near-by village found the animal and helped the dog recover.
Animal-rights volunteers are planning to move it to a shelter in the town of Konitsa.
Greece’s population of stray dogs has increased in recent years as families found themselves unable to look after pets due to the economic crisis.
The government is trying to create a legal framework for pets and strays.
Last week a draft bill that obligates Greek animal owners to neuter their pets or pay a levy if they have pairs for breeding was posted online for public consultation.
