300 Migrants Arrive at Greek Island

Tuesday evening saw around 300 migrants and refugees land on the Aegean island of Lesvos, already home to thousands of undocumented people.
Eight boats landed at different points on the island after setting out from Turkey, with photos showing hundreds of people wearing life jackets coming ashore.
The number and location of the new arrivals caused problems for the Greek authorities at Parga Thermi, Akrotiri Korakas, Agrila Akrotiri, Filakos Prokopis and Gera Gulf.
Moria, already overcrowded, was called upon to process, register and identify the 300 people. The camp has already exceeded its capacity and has seen frequent outbreaks of disorder among residents and with Greek police.
As Greece heads into spring, it is thought the improving weather conditions will see an increase in those trying to reach the islands in an attempt to gain asylum in the EU.
The Greek government has come in for criticism for moving people who arrive to the islands to the mainland.
A report earlier this month in Germany’s Die Welt newspaper  cited unidentified EU officials claiming Greece has moved thousands of migrants and asylum seekers from its island camps to the mainland.
This meant they were not being returned to Turkey in significant numbers, as per the March 2016 deal signed between the EU and Ankara. They also claimed only a fraction of arrivals since March 2016 had been sent back to Turkey.
