Instagram enthusiasts descended to Greece’sĀ Andros in a joint effort to highlight the beauty of this island situated only two hours away from Athens.
The amateur photographers participating in the Greek Instagramers Events (grevents.gr) tried to capture the elegant architecture of the capital, Chora, the green landscape of the inland and the fabulous beaches.
Their collective effort at #My_Andros will be presented at an exhibition which is to be held in Chora in June.
Andros; a miniature of Greece, boasts high mountains, many ravines, small rivers, valleys planted with vines, running water, cypress, oak trees, fruit bearing trees, olives and hot springs.
The island has rich geographical contrasts which combine the dry Cycladic landscape with rich vegetation and abundant waters.
Andros also has a long maritime history and is home to some of the wealthy Greek ship owning families. Others on the island have had aĀ relationship with the sea as fishermen, merchants, shipbuilders and sailors, as well.
Since ancient times, ships such as fishing boats, sailing ships and later steamships have beenĀ built on the island.
At the beginning of the 20th century many successful ship owners still lived in their mansions on the island, but in later years many of them relocated to London and New York.
Today, more than 17% of the world fleet belongs to Greek ship owners, and approximately 30% of this is owned by Andriotes.
