PM Meets Greek Orthodox Leader in Athens

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has welcomed the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s efforts to resolve the church aspect of the name dispute between Greece and FYROM.
At a meeting on Monday in Athens with Bartholomew I, the spiritual leader of the Christian Orthodox community, Tsipras said: “The radiance of the Patriarchate and your internationally recognized institutional role contribute to your playing an especially positive role in crucial issues on the international political stage or in critical global issues, such as those of the environment.”
At the meeting at Maximos Mansion government headquarters, Tsipras also congratulated Bartholomew for his initiatives in highlighting leading environmental protection issues and in the social repercussions of climate change.
The Ecumenical Patriarch thanked the premier for his supportive words in terms of the environmental protection. In terms of the FYROM church issue, he said it was “within the normal obligations of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to try and repeal the schisms wherever they may exist and work towards Orthodox unity and collaboration, as we have done all these years.”
