Olympiacos Piraeus were the big winners in the water polo European championship final beating Italian giants Pro Recco 9-7 in Genoa on Sunday night.
This is the second time the Greek water polo team wins the LEN Champions League trophy after 2002, when they beat Hungary’s Honved in Budapest.
The triumph of the Greek team becomes even more significant given hat the Italians have a much higher budget than Olympiacos and they were playing at home. The Greeks jumped into the pool as the outsider side.
Yet it was the great defense play of the Piraeus club that did not allow Pro Recco to take advantage of their home advantage and superb offense.
