Turkish Judges Again Refuse Release of Greek Soldiers (video)

Sgt. Dimitris Kouklatzis and Lt. Angelos Mitretodis will stay in a Turkish prison after a court in Edirne (Adrianopolis) turned down a fifth request that the Greek soldiers be released from pre-trial custody.
Tuesday’s decision followed a defense team bid to have to two men — held since accidentally crossing the Turkish border on March 2 — released from custody.
All previous four appeals have been rejected on the grounds that they do not have permanent residence in Turkey and are therefore considered a flight risk.
Last Wednesday, Tsipras described the detainment of two Greek soldiers by Turkey, a fellow NATO member, as a “wound” for the western alliance.
“It is a wound for all of NATO the unprecedented fact that two soldiers from a NATO country are being detained by another NATO country for more than four months because they passed a few meters into its territory by mistake and without any charges laid against them,” Tsipras said and called on Turkey to help the wound heal by returning the two soldiers.
