Spare a thought of the brave Evzone who is required to stand still on Sunday at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier in front of the Hellenic Parliament as temperatures climbed up to the 40-degree Celsius mark (104 ºF).
A colleague is sweeping the sweat off the Evzone’s face who is required to stand guard mute and expressionless for 60 minutes.

Tourists also suffered from the Athenian heatwave as they sought refuge in the parks and shaded squares of the Greek capital.

Greek authorities decided to close the archaeological site of the Acropolis at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The site will also be closing early on Monday, the Culture Ministry said, in order to protect staff at the site and visitors from the dangers of heatstroke.
Meteorologists say that the heatwave will last until Tuesday.
