Greek President: 44th Anniversary of Restoration of Democracy Overshadowed by Tragedy

“Today is a day of remembrance. It is the 44th anniversary of the restoration of democracy, but it is all overshadowed by the tragedy of the dead from the fire,” President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos said on Tuesday.
The Greek president visited the buildings of the former Greek Military Police (ESA), currently available to the Association of Prisoners and Exiled Resistance Officers 1967-1974.
The former ESA headquarters were used as interrogation and torture places during the seven-year junta.
Pavlopoulos laid a wreath at the monument of Spyros Moustaklis, a prisoner who became disabled after being tortured, and made a tour of the premises. Among others, he visited the cells and examined the desk of Alekos Panagoulis, the area where Moustaklis was tortured and viewed items used by those in exile.
The president of the Association of Prisoners and Exiled Resistance Officers outlined to Pavlopoulos the methods used by the resistance in their actions against the dictators.
