Reports are emerging of a forest fire burning in the Evia region which, according to Greek firefighters, is being fanned by winds in the area and dry fuel.
The blaze broke out in the Dirfyon municipal region in a dry pine forest. Residents of the villages of Kondotispotis and Stavros have been instructed to evacuate as a preventative measure.
Greece’s Fire Service says 50 personnel, 21 vehicles plus four firefighting airplanes and helicopters are involved in the operation to bring the fire under control.
In recent weeks, the authorities have issued repeated warnings that fire could break out in various regions of Greece, with Attica being a particular example in recent days.
The death toll from the July fires in East Attica has now reached 94, and the government has used emergency procedures to immediately being demolishing dangerous and illegally-built structures in vulnerable areas.
