Evia Fires Under Control, Greek Fire Dept says

There are no more active fire fronts in the region of Psachna in Evia, local Fire Department  commander Vangelis Palios has told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, expressing the belief that the fires would be completely extinguished by Monday morning.

The fires that broke out on Sunday in the Psachna area of the island, particularly strong in the Dirfyon dry pine forest, are under control after 50 firefighters with 21 firetrucks, 60 volunteers, firefighting planes and helicopters fought against the blazes through the night.

Residents of the villages of Kondodespoti and Stavros were instructed to evacuate as a preventative measure.

Luckily, Sunday’s strong winds that made the firefighters’ work harder have eased. However, the Evia Fire Department is still on alert.
