Despite Sunday’s disappointing loss in the Canadian Open final for 20-year-old birthday boy Stefanos Tsitsipas, sportsmanship was the winner.
After receiving the Rogers Cup, Spanish winner Rafael Nadal, claiming his latest title, told the crowd: “First of all, I want to thank Stefanos for an amazing week and a happy birthday.
“I want to say well done and keep going. You have an amazing future ahead of you.
“You also have a great team behind you supporting so I wish you all the very best!”
Tsitsipas played great tennis, but couldn’t outlast superstar Nadal who faced an unknown quantity in the young Greek who could have derailed the Spaniard’s quest for a fourth Rogers Cup.
Despite a strong performance from the unseeded Greek, Nadal ran out the 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) winner.
