Athens Empties as Greeks Leave for Summer Vacation

With the approach of the Aug. 15 holiday, the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, the last wave of Athenians left the capital city for their summer vacations on Tuesday, putting the coast guard and traffic police on standby.
The highways were flooded with traffic as Athenians headed to their villages located on the mainland, while ferries to Paros and Tinos were reportedly booked to capacity.
Some 41,000-plus passengers boarded ferries in the ports of of Piraeus, Rafino and Lavrio on Monday, headed for the Aegean islands.
Aug. 15 is a public holiday in Greece and is one of the most important days in Orthodox Christianity. People attend religious services and throw parties all over the country in cities and villages.
