Kurdish Politician Flees from Turkey to Greece Seeking Asylum

A former MP for the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Turkey was arrested by Greek police in the northeastern border town of Orestiada on Wednesday, for illegal entry into the country.
Leyla Birlik, 44, intends to apply for asylum in Greece. A prosecutor subsequently ordered her release until her asylum request has been examined.
In January, Birlik received a one-year-and-nine-month prison sentence for “insulting the president.”
Birlik has also previously been accused of being a member of a terrorist group.
