Local Authorities Say Migrants Urgently Need to Be Moved from Aegean Islands

The Aegean Islands have seen an increase of migrants from 10,349 earlier this year to 16,334 this summer.
Local authoroities on Lesvos, Chios and Samos are once again calling for the central government to reduce the amount of migrants on the islands by relocating them to the mainland.
“It has to be understood that the decongestion of the islands is an urgent necessity,” explained the regional governor for the northern Aegean, Christina Kalogirou, to Kathimerini.
Kalogirou also added that an agreement was in place with the Migration Minister, Dimitris Vitsas, who had pledged to reduce the amount of migrants that the islands are hosting down to 10,000 by this September.
At the beginning of the month, it was announced by the European Commission that an additional 37.5 million euros will be given to Greece as emergency aid to help with the migrant crisis gripping the country.
In addition, according to a Deutsche Welle report published last month, so far Greece has seen a migrant influx by 122 percent in 2018 compared to the same period last year, equaling a total of 24,000 new migrant and refugee arrivals in the first half of the year.
It is estimated that some 18,000 asylum-seekers are now living on the Greek islands awaiting their application to be processed.
