Greek Migrant Center on Lesvos Reached 'Boiling Point'


The United Nations refugee agency warned on Friday that the situation at an overcrowded reception center on Lesvos island was “reaching boiling point”.
Charlie Yaxley of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) called on Greek authorities on Friday to speed up the transfer of eligible asylum-seekers to the mainland.
More than 7,000 asylum-seekers and migrants are crammed into shelters built to accommodate just 2,000 people at Moria. A quarter of those are children.
“There are an increasing number of people presenting with mental health problems, the response and treatment is woefully inadequate,” Yaxley added.
The UNHCR warns that children, including hundreds of unaccompanied boys and girls, are particularly at risk, as well as dozens of pregnant women, new-born babies, survivors of sexual violence, and other extremely vulnerable people.
In a report earlier in the week the BBC branded Moria the “worst in the world”. It claimed that children as young as ten attempting suicide.
