Matthew Nimetz, the United Nations Special Representative for the naming dispute between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia expressed his fears that if FYROM rejects the Prespa Agreement either in the Referendum of September 30, or in the Parliament, possibly another 25 years may be needed to reach an Agreement for the issue.
”I hope that the Agreement will take the green light by both countries. It is a just and decent solution that meets all the major targets set by the two sides,” said Mr Nimetz in an interview with Balkan Insight Agency.
He added that a negative outcome would give the message to the international community that FYROM doesn’t care about this issue and doesn’t even care for the prospect of joining the EU and NATO.
Reflecting on what happened during the last 25 years, Matthew Nimetz said that Skopje believed that time works on their behalf as they thought that as the years were passing by, Greece would change its stance towards the issue. He was the one who was warning both sides that a solution has to be found as soon as possible, so that the new Balkan State could follow the European path.
Matthew Nimetz has withdrawn from the role of Negotiator. He says that he still has tight bonds with both countries but he doesn’t have to worry professionally about this issue anymore.
