The new “Silver Arrow” fast train, that can make the Thessaloniki-Athens route in 3.5 hours, made its maiden voyage on Saturday from Thessaloniki to Katerini.
The new train left Thessaloniki’s 1st Railway Station at 9:05 in an inauguration ceremony with several officials attending. Among them were Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Nikos Mavraganis, the Deputy Minister of Rural Development Markos Bolaris, Alternate Minister of Rural Development Vassilis Kokkalis, Thessaloniki MPs, Italian Ambassador to Greece Luigi Maras, TRAINOSE CEO Philippos Tsalidis and members of TRAINOSE parent company Ferrovio dellostato Italiane.
Mavraganis said that at the end of the year, the last leg of the Athens-Thessaloniki electric railway line will be delivered so that citizens will be able to make the Athens-Thessaloniki trip in 3.5 hours.
“This is the first step,” the infrastructure and transport minister said, “because we continue work and we believe that we will complete the effort to connect the railway with all critical ports and logistics centers where we operate in Greece, so that a big transport network will be the pillar of Greece’s economic growth. In 2017, transport grew 18 percent and transport growth will continue for the next 10 years.”
The TRAINOSE CEO underlined that “we are entering a new era for TRAINOSE, which improves its services, becomes more competitive and I believe that this new era will help not only the growth of transport but also the development of economy itself.”
Tsalidis said that the “Silver Arrow” will start regular routes after a series of pilot trips. The train will run at maximum speed, which is 200 km/h, in the 52 km long Katerini-Platy section. The Lianokladi-Domokos section, also 52 km long, is expected, to be ready by the end of the year.
