New Record-Breaking Month for Passenger Traffic at Athens International Airport

According to data released by Greece’s largest airport, Athens International Airport (AIA), August 2018 was the month with the highest number of passenger traffic.
2,886,740 people passed through the airport, breaking yet another traffic record. The previous best performing month was July 2017 with 2.56 million passengers.
Data shows that the increase so far for 2018 is 11.5%.

In total, during the first eight months of 2018, the airport’s traffic reached 16,200,000 passengers, with an increase of 11.5 percent with both domestic and foreign traffic increasing by 5.2 and 14.8 percent, respectively.
Based on the above information, if the current pace is maintained, the traffic numbers of Greece’s main airport will bring a new, overwhelming annual record, breaking the barrier of 24 million passengers.
Should that be the case, a large-scale expansion of the existing Terminal and the launching of one of the largest investments in the country for the next 5 years–estimated between €200 and €400 million ($232 – $464 million)–will commence in due course.
