The Prosecutor’s office investigating the East Attica fires that led to the death of 99 citizens has summoned about 20 officials to testify next week.
The Greek officials are suspects for actions or omissions that led to the death of 99 people. The summons follow lawsuits filed by the relatives of eight people who lost their lives in the blazes in Mati.
The crimes investigated include manslaughter, criminal negligence, arson and exposure to danger.
Supreme Court prosecutor Xeni Dimitriou ordered for the appearance of Attica Regional Governor Rena Dourou, Marathon Mayor Ilias Psinakis, Rafina Mayor Evangelos Bournous, the former general secretary for civil protection, Yiannis Kapakis, the former fire service chief Sotiris Terzoudis, the former police chief Konstantinos Tsouvalas and other high-ranking police, fire service and coast guard officers.
The July 23 East Attica wildfires left 99 people dead, dozens injured and totally destroyed dozens of properties and caused major damages in the seaside town of Mati.
