The island of Zakynthos has moved at least three centimeters to the southwest following the strong earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale that shook the island early on Friday.
Dr. Athanassios Ganas, Research Director at the Geodynamics Institute of the Athens National Observatory, told the state-run Athens-Macedonia news agency on Monday that this determination was made after the digital processing and analysis of radar images taken by the EU and ESA satellite Sentinel-1 of the Copernicus service. These images reflect the surface deformation on Zakynthos.
The movement is mostly observed on a horizontal level, while no vertical movement has been observed. Ganas added that scientists are currently examining if the earthquake caused other movements in the surrounding region.
