A short video showing showing 35-year-old Konstantinos Katsifas holding a rifle while walking in the village of Bularat (Vouliarates), near the Greek-Albanian border, was released by private Albanian broadcaster Report TV on Monday evening.
Katsifas is apparently dressed in combat gear and carrying an assault rifle.
At least four shots can be heard, although it remains unclear if they are coming from Katsifas’s rifle.
According to the Albanian official version of events, Katsifas fired at police officers at around 9:45 am local time after a brawl regarding the celebration of the “Oxi” Day anniversary in the village.
Following the shootings, Katsifas ran into hiding in the hills above the village. The “Rinea” special forces of the Albanian police arrived by helicopter from Tirana to locate and arrest him.
According to the Albanian police, when Katsifas was discovered, he not only refused to surrender but fired repeatedly at the security services with a Kalashnikov assault rifle. After an exchange of fire lasting almost half an hour, he was shot and killed.
Next to his body, police found a bag of containing approximately 100 bullets, and a military-style knife.
The video was shot from the inside of a local cafe in the village.
