New Data Reveal Extent of Cretan Fires

An area of 1,534 hectares was burnt on Crete in 2018 by the fires that broke out on the island during the year.
According to Greeceā€™s Fire Brigade, 556 fires that burned farmland and forests were recorded on the island of Crete this year. Of these, 225 fires occurred in the regional unit of Heraklion, 122 in the regional unit of Chania, 139 in the regional unit of Rethymno, and 70 in the regional unit of Lassithi.
Chania, however, led the way with 1,061 hectares of burnt land. In Lasithi 364 hectares were lost to fires, while in Heraklion the corresponding figure was 85.7 hectares and in Rethymno, 23.1 hectares.
