World champion and Olympic gold medalist Lefteris Petrounias, who competes in the still rings event in artistic gymnastics, underwent surgery to his left shoulder in Annecy, France, on Monday. The procedure is intended to correct a problem with his tendon that has troubled Petrounias for some months.
The surgery was performed Monday morning and the Greek champion will remain hospitalized for 24 hours.
Petrounias, who won the gold medal on Friday at the World Championship in Doha, will remain in France for a few more days in order for doctors to monitor his recovery. Petrounias is slated to return to Athens by the end of the week.
According to his rehabilitation schedule, the 27-year-old athlete will resume full training in three months and will be ready to compete again in five months.
