The emergence of Athens as one of the most popular “city-break” destinations in Europe during the last few years has caused a substantial increase in the city’s hotel room rates.
According to a monthly report published by the Greek Tourism Confederation Institute (INSETE), Athens recorded an increase in prices for every hotel which had rating of more than two stars.
In comparison with other European cities who compete for tourist euros, Athens recorded an increase in the average rate for a five-star hotel room from €210 ($237) to €222 ($251) in just one year.
The rest of the main European city-break destinations recorded a reduction in room rates, with Barcelona falling from €333 ($376) in 2017 to €320 ($362) this year and Istanbul from €110 in 2017 to €108 in 2018.
Rome recorded a small increase, from €320 ($362) to €324 ($366) this year.
A similar trend was seen for three and four-star hotels, with Athens’ average rates for October 2018 being €5 more expensive for the former category and €10 for the latter.
