The isle of Corfu, Karpenisi, Agrinio, Tripoli and Nafpaktos and many other areas in western and central Greece suffered severe damage this week from storm “Penelope”. The weather system, which has lashed Greece since Sunday, brought heavy rain and high winds to the entire nation. Bridges have been destroyed, towns flooded, and roads so extensively damaged that villages have been cut off from all contact with the outside world.
The continuous heavy rainfall turned the roads of Agrinio and Nafpaktos into rushing rivers, completely destroying a temporary bridge over the Evinos river.
On the island of Corfu, the famous 19th-century windmill of Garitsa was damaged in the punishing winds that swept the island on Monday.
In the Ilia region of the western Peloponnese, the extensive rainfall created major damage to local roads connecting villages around the river of Enipeas. Authorities were forced to close the bridge between the villages of Lantzoi and Chelidoni.
Landslides occurred along the provincial road between Tripoli and Clitoria in the central Peloponnese due to the heavy rainfall, with the local authorities warning drivers to be vigilant, as further landslides may be a possibility.
In the Agrinio village of Zevgaraki, flooding caused extensive damage to houses and cars. Local people complained publicly that with every heavy rainfall the village suffers from flooding, and accused authorities of not doing the necessary public works improvements to prevent it.
In Central Greece, the town of Agrafa suffered extensive damage to its road network. The villages of Tridendro, Maratho, Vraggiana, Monastiraki and Trovatto are completely cut off from the rest of the country due to widespread landslides.
Meteorologists estimate that “Penelope” will strike the island of Cyprus over the next several hours.
