Greek Cleaning Lady Who Faked Diploma Released From Jail

An appeals court in Larissa, central Greece on Wednesday ordered the immediate release of a 53-year-old cleaner who had been imprisoned for forging her school degree in order to get the job.
In a controversial court ruling earlier this month the woman, who had worked in a nursery school for 15 years, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges of defrauding the public.
The woman, who has not been named, was hired as a cleaner for a kindergarten in 1996. She subsequently was charged with defrauding the Greek state and receiving wages illegally for a span of twenty years.
The country’s Supreme Court prosecutor last week said it would re-examine the ruling, widely criticized as overly harsh, to determine whether the case should be retried.
Court officials said that the woman has been released for health reasons pending a decision by the Supreme Court.
